I’m Nick Wons, a freelance photographer in Toronto for over 15 years. My interest in and exposure to photography began at a very young age. At the time, I had no idea how significant of a role it would play in my adult life.

My first memory related to cameras was playing with my father’s Pentax camera. I must have been 7 or 8 years old. There was something captivating about looking at the world through the viewfinder and hearing the shutter’s sound when I took a photo. During my teenage years, I met a new neighbor who happened to be a professional photographer. Not only did he create amazing fine art photos, but he also shot for clients like Sports Illustrated and various other publications. I remember spending countless evenings sitting on my parents’ front steps, engaging in hours-long conversations with him about photography, his ongoing projects, and occasionally providing feedback on his ideas. This relationship was truly cherished and became a large source of inspiration for me.

It wasn’t until my mid-20s, upon returning to Toronto after a few years living outside the city, that I truly delved into photography. Armed with a prosumer Nikon camera and plenty of time, I started photographing everything. Through trial and error, I learned and worked to find my unique “voice” in photography. Simultaneously, I was deeply involved in Toronto’s electronic music scene. I hosted a radio show on 89.5FM CIUT every Saturday night, and I performed at raves, and organized events across downtown Toronto. After hiring numerous photographers to cover my shows and getting inspired by their portfolios, I decided to start capturing photos at my own events. Little did I know that this would mark the beginning of my photography career.

My first paid photography assignment was appropriately capturing club photos for Urban Male Magazine (UMM) at venues like Brunswick House and Tequila Jacks in Toronto. These photos were published in the magazine’s hard copy every month. The early days of my career were filled with late nights in Toronto’s Entertainment district (and at home editing), numerous parties and events, countless photographs taken, and extensive networking. It wasn’t long before my work and name gained recognition, leading to regular collaborations with prestigious clients such as the Toronto International Film Festival and the Directors Guild Of Canada. Additionally, I became a senior photographer with Product Toronto magazine where I was capturing editorial photos which were consistently featured every month in their issues, all of which was providing a significant boost to my portfolio as a relative newcomer in the photography industry.

Over time, I transitioned from photography being a side gig to pursuing it as a full-time endeavor. Faced with a choice, I decided to wholeheartedly commit to my photography career. Now, more than a decade after making that decision, I find myself creating exceptional content and digital assets for my clients on a full-time basis and still loving it as much as the first time I picked up a camera.

Currently, my photography work spans various subjects, from capturing construction and developments for some of North America’s largest companies to shooting product photos for multinational corporations, covering corporate events, film festivals, and photographing celebrities. Notable clients include NATO Canada, Oxford Properties, Indigo Chapters, Toronto International Film Festival, Sutter Hill Group, Trilateral Commission, PraxisPR, and personalities like Canadian Olympic pole vaulter Alysha Newman.

Due to the nature of my work and the caliber of my clients, my images have been published both in print and online across North America, South America, Europe, and even as far as Japan. My hard work and dedication to my craft has led me to become a member of the International Federation of Journalists, representing 600,000 media professionals worldwide. Additionally, I’ve become a contributing newswire partner with SOPA Images.

As for what lies ahead, that remains a question without a definitive answer. There are always projects in the pipeline, but one thing is certain: I will continue to take photographs and collaborate on exciting endeavors with my amazing clients, all the while loving every minute of my photography career.
